How to calculate your dog's exact daily portion: the veterinary formula
The feeding chart on the bag is built for an average active dog that is not yours. How to calculate the exact calories your dog needs based on weight, activity, age, and physiological state, using the same RER formula veterinarians use.
In 30 seconds
Manufacturer feeding charts are built for "the average active dog." If your dog is sedentary, neutered, older, or overweight, the chart on the bag overfeeds him. The real formula: calculate the Resting Energy Requirement (RER), multiply it by an activity/physiological-state factor, then divide the result by the caloric density of the food (the kcal/kg listed on the manufacturer's website).
The formula
Step 1: calculate RER (Resting Energy Requirement)
RER = 70 × (body weight in kg) raised to the 0.75 power.
For dogs between roughly 4 and 100 lb (about 2 to 45 kg), a simplified version gives nearly identical results:
RER = (30 × body weight in kg) + 70.
The math runs in kilograms even on a US label, so convert first: divide pounds by 2.205 to get kilograms. A 66 lb dog is 30 kg.
Step 2: multiply by the activity / state factor

Step 3: divide by the caloric density of the food
The kcal/kg figure appears on the label or, more often, on the manufacturer's website (it is not always printed on the physical bag, so look it up). Typical ranges:

A worked example
My dog: a neutered male Labrador Retriever, 66 lb (30 kg), moderate daily walks, not overweight.
Step 1: RER = (30 × 30) + 70 = 970 kcal/day.
Step 2: factor 1.6 (neutered but active): 970 × 1.6 = 1,552 kcal/day.
Step 3: my kibble is 3,800 kcal/kg. I need 1,552 / 3,800 = 0.408 kg = about 14.4 oz/day (roughly 408 grams).
If the bag chart said "for 66 lb dogs: 13 to 16 oz," the calculation confirms you are in range. If the chart said "18 oz," you are overfeeding by roughly 3.5 oz/day, which works out to about 80 lb of extra food a year.
The trick the manufacturer chart leaves out
Feeding charts are usually calibrated for the average active, intact dog. If your dog is neutered:
- His resting metabolism drops about 25 to 30 percent after the procedure.
- He needs less energy for years afterward, not just a few weeks.
Applying the 1.4 factor (neutered, sedentary) or 1.6 (neutered, active) corrects for this. The bag chart does not.
Ideal weight versus current weight
Once you have a calculated portion, what matters is what your dog's body does with that portion over 4 to 6 weeks:
- Loses weight (unintended): raise the portion by 10 percent.
- Gains weight (unintended): cut the portion by 10 percent.
- Holds steady: the portion is right.
Repeat the adjustment with every change of food, every meaningful change in activity, and every life-stage change (puppy to adult, adult to senior).
Body Condition Score: the tool that tells you whether the weight is right
The WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee uses an official 9-point scale. The target is 4 or 5.

| 8-9 | Obese (heavy fat deposits, no waist, sagging abdomen) |
If your dog scores BCS 6-7, do not wait for the next vet visit to weigh him: cut the portion by 10 to 20 percent and add exercise.
How to split the portion across the day

A single daily meal raises the risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat) in predisposed breeds (Great Dane, Saint Bernard, German Shepherd Dog, Boxer) and makes digestion harder.
What to check
- Calculate your dog's RER from his current weight (or ideal weight if he is overweight).
- Apply the correct activity factor.
- Look up the caloric density of your food on the manufacturer's website.
- Adjust the real portion over 4 to 6 weeks and compare weight.
- Score the BCS every 2 to 4 weeks. Ribs palpable without pressing, waist visible.
